As of 2023, Spotify’s podcast catalog of content stands at 5 million programs, accounting for 34% of the total streaming on the platform but with spotify mod support for podcasts standing at less than 12%, mainly due to technical limitations and copyright restrictions. For example, The official client identifies illegal downloads through dynamic audio watermarking technology (±0.05 seconds error rate), and 98% of requests to third-party modified versions attempting to play exclusive podcasts such as The Joe Rogan Experience are blocked with an average delay of more than 8 seconds. Technically, the Spotify podcast API uses the AES-256 encryption protocol since 2022, with key rotation every 24 hours, and forcing developers to invest more than 160 hours of reverse engineering efforts, equivalent to 2.3 times the cost to crack the music module.
User behavior statistics show that about 27% of all spotify mod users worldwide tried to play podcast content in 2023, but the playback success rate was only 6%, and the probability of interruption was even as high as 44% (only 2% of real users). For example, the “Podcast_Unlocker_v7.2” program made available by a third-party forum claims to support podcast downloading, but in reality, its download speed limit is only 1.2Mbps (5Mbps for the initial version), and the file corruption rate is more than 30%. Compliance in the industry promises to further constrict the living room of cracked podcasts.
